An Angel Comes To Mary
Luke 1:26-38
In the town of Nazareth, there lived a young woman named Mary.
Mary was
engaged to a man by the name of Joseph. Joseph and Mary were descendants of
King David. They were brown skinned and dark haired, because they were
Jewish people. They spoke in the Hebrew
language.
Yahweh was Mary and Joseph's god. They worshiped Yahweh and believed in his laws. They knew of his promise of a coming savior and that a young woman who was not married would be chosen to have his son.
One day Yahweh sent the angel Gabriel to Mary. Coming into the home of Mary, the angel said, “Greetings, you are highly favored for the Most High God is with you.” Mary was startled by what the angel said and she tried to figure out what such a greeting might mean.
The angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, Yahweh is good to you. You see, you will conceive and have a son, and you will call him Yasha. (In the Hebrew language Yasha meant Savior.) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High God. Yahweh will give him the throne of his ancestor King David. He will be King over the people of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”
“How can this be?” Mary asked. “I do not have a husband.”
The angel answered her, saying, “The Holy Spirit will come over you, and the power of the Most High God will overshadow you. For this reason the Child will be called holy; he is Yahweh’s Son. Elizabeth, your cousin, is also going to have a child. People call her childless, but she is now in her sixth month. There is nothing that Yahweh cannot do.”
“I am the Lord’s servant," Mary said, "let it happen to me as you have said.” Then the angel left Mary.
Mary must have been very excited and happy to be the one chosen by Yahweh to have his son. Mary must have been a righteous person who loved Yahweh's ways, for Yahweh chose her to raise his son according to his laws.
