Queen Vashti

Book of Esther

King Ahasuerus reigned from India to Ethiopia, over a hundred and twenty-seven provinces. The throne of his kingdom was called Shushan.

The rulers of Persia and Media, the nobles, and the princes of the provinces were in the palace as the king showed the riches of his glorious kingdom. He showed the honor of his excellent greatness for one hundred and eighty days. When these days were over, the king made a banquet for all the people in Shushan. The banquet lasted for seven days in the court of the palace garden. The king had drinks served in golden cups. Each cup was made different than the others. There was royal wine in abundance. The king had ordered every chief of his to make sure everyone was happy.

King Ahasuerus’ wife, Vashti, made a banquet for the women also. On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was feeling good with wine, he told seven of his servants to bring Vashti, the queen, to show her beauty to all those at the banquet, for Vashti was very beautiful. She refused to come at the king’s command. The king was very angry and his fury burned within him.

The king said to the wise men who knew the laws, “What should be done with queen Vashti according to the law?  She has not obeyed my command.”

Memucan answered, “Vashti has not only done wrong to the king, but also to all the princes and the people who are here. This matter will be heard by all women and will cause them to rebel against their husbands. If it please the king, let there be a royal decree written among the laws of Persia and Media that Vashti is not to come before you. Let the king give her royal estate to someone better. When the king's decree is heard throughout all your empire, all wives must give their husbands honor.”

This saying pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan.
