Nupe, the Faithful Old Hound Dog
When Dad was a little fellow,
He loved to hear coon-dogs bellow.
Gramps chased the hounds through the pine,
But Nupe and Dad came on behind.
Nupe could keep up with the best,
But Dad, a child, would have to rest.
Love of the pack, Nupe’s heart entwined,
But Nupe and Dad came on behind.
Nupe was good, he loved to track;
When Dad stayed home he led the pack.
If Dad was there, he’d bark and whine,
But Nupe and Dad came on behind.
Dad’s strength increased, as years flew,
And love increased between the two.
They hunted after Nupe went blind,
But Nupe and Dad came on behind.
