A Pioneer Bride
In his youth Sam went to war,
Sweet Nancy stayed at home.
She didn’t know what lonely was,
Until her Sam was gone.
Sam wrote to Nancy faithfully,
But it didn’t seem the same.
Non-the-less she stalked the box
Until the postman came.
Sam thought of Nan home alone,
And dreamed of her at night;
Her love gave Sam the courage
To fight the freedom fight.
Sam letters reassured her,
They seemed so far apart,
But still love’s glowing embers
Grew Stronger in each heart.
Working ground and tending stock,
Was Nancy’s chores each day;
There was no time for leisure
Since Sam had gone away.
Town folks came to honor Sam,
A hero coming home,
But no one thought of Nancy
Who fought the war alone.
